Abstract
This research aims to study the development of Buddhism in Korea, to analyze the problems and the solutions to the problems in Buddhism in South Korea, and to propose an approach to promoting Buddhism in South Korea. From the research, it is found that Buddhism was disseminated to Goguryeo, Baekje, and Silla respectively. Then, it was glorious as a national religion during the Unified Silla and the Goryeo periods. Later, it has been less important role from the Joseon period until now. This research shows that the problems of Buddhism in South Korea are from the lack of a current role of the Sangha, the lack of supporting from a political leader, and the harm from different religious believers. The solutions to the above problems are the creating of a current role of the Sangha, the giving support to religious activities from the government, and the creating of the understanding among religious believers. Lastly, the approach to promoting Buddhism in South Korea consists of the maintaining the strengths in Buddhism in South Korea, the disposal of the weaknesses in Buddhism in South Korea, and the creating of the unique selling point in Buddhism in South Korea.
