Abstract
This dissertation is of three objectives, namely:- 1) to translate Sârattha Samuccaya Scripture Catubhânavâra from Pâli language to Thai language 2) to analytically study the contents, the Languages, the relationship in Sârattha Samuccaya Catubhânavâra Atthakathâ, and 3) to analytically study the values and the influences of Sârattha Samuccaya Catubhânavâra Atthakathâ on the Thai society.
The research has found that in the translation of Sârattha Samuccaya Catubhânavâra Atthakathâ the researcher carried out the ways of translation into Thai language by comparing with the Thai commentaries of Mahâchulalongkorn Rajavidyalaya Edition, and Catubhânavâra Scripture of the Thai edition and the idioms in Preaching King Bhūmipala Adulyadeja of the present reign, has the Royal Order to collect and publish at the ceremony of the Royal Burning dead body of Somdej Phra Ariya Vongsâgata Ńâņa, Somdej Phra Sańgharâja (Vâsana Mahâ Thera).
The framework of Sârattha Samuccaya Catubhânavâra Atthakathâ was composed by Venerable Sri Lankan monk named Anomadassī in 1600 B.E. for explaining 29 groups of Paritra Bhânavâra consisting of Mangala Sutta, Ratana Sutta, Karanīyametta Sutta and Mahâ Samaya Sutta etc. which are set up as 4 paths called Catubhânavâras, one of which is of 8,000 syllables.
The characteristics of composing the scripture of Sârattha Samuccaya Catubhânavâra Atthakathâ are of the characteristics of composing of the pattern of the prose, the beautiful and the pleasurable one with the clear meanings which is divided into four parts:- 1) Pathama-Bhânavâra, consisting of the description of the Three Refuses, the 10 sikkhâpadas and Mangala Sutta etc. 2) Dutiya-Bhânavâra, consist of the description of Mahâkassapa-Bojjhańga Sutta and Mahâmoccallâna Sutta etc. 3) Tatiya- Bhânavâra, consist of the description of Girimânanta Sutta and Isigiri Sutta etc. 4) Catuttha Bhânavâra, consist of the description of Âtânâṭiya Sutta, Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta and Mahâsamaya Sutta etc.
For grammatical analysis, it was found that grammars in the scripture of Sârattha Samuccaya Catubhânavâra Atthakathâ depend on the terminology, for examples; how to use the terms, how to use the verbs, how to use the affixations, how to use the proverbs and literary style, how to analyze the terms, and how to analogical analyze the meaning of the terms. Not only the scripture of Sârattha Samuccaya Catubhânavâra Atthakathâ was composed for expanded idiom, but also was shown the meaning of the terms as significant parts of the sentence. The analyzation of the usage of the principles of the Thai language in the scripture of Sârattha Samuccaya Catubhânavâra Atthakathâ and other scriptures is devided into 5 parts, namely:- 1) the relationship among Vinaya Pitaka, 2) the relationship among Suttanta Pitaka, 3) the relationship among Abhidhamma Pitaka, 4) the relationship among Atthakathâ, 5) the relationship among the special Pakarana called Visuddhi Magga.
For the analysis of its values and its doctrinal explanation, it was found that the scripture of Sârattha Samuccaya Catubhânavâra Atthakathâ is of the re-collection of the Doctrinal Principles and the knowledge in Buddhism, the fact of which is of the relationship with the Tipipaka, the commentaries and the analysis of the values in preserving and spreading Buddhism. The Sârattha Samuccaya Catubhânavâra Atthakathâ is one part of Paritta used in chanting in different important ceremonies both in Sri Lankâ and in Thailand. Thus, the chanting of Parittas which are the Buddhist Doctrinal Principles is the way to protect Buddhism to maintain for ever. It is also to spread the Buddha Dhammas on the side of preventing the dangers. The chanting of Parittas is the way to train the people’s mind to recollect the values of the Three Refuges: the Buddha, the Dhammas and the Sanghas and also to spread the loving kindness to all beings. The influences from the chanting of Parittas are of the sided of the literature, the scripture, the artistic works, the ceremonies and the cultures. To preserve and to spread Buddhism in Sârattha Samuccaya Catubhânavâra Atthakathâ help the people to know about the meaning of the texts chanting relating to developing of Buddha Mantras. Already studied known and spread. This fact is the mental and the wisdom development for ever both on the side of the education and the practices.
