A Model of Insight Meditation Application for Development of the Sangha in Sisaket Province

Abstract

ABSTRACT

 

             The purposes of this research were (1) to study the benefits of Vipassanã or insight meditation to develop the Buddhist monks, (2)  to study the usage of Vipassanã or insight meditation to develop the Buddhist monks in Sisaket province, and (3) to present forms of the usage of Vipassanã or insight meditation to develop the Buddhist monks in Sisaket province.

             The documentary research was performed to do in this study. The researcher has found information from Tipitaka, documents, books, multimedia and books collection of main practices. Moreover, other information was from in depth interview of the Buddhist ecclesiastical official monks from 18 Meditation Centers in Sisaket province. The Information was analyzed to gain the real substance from interviews, observations and also discussion of Dhamma practice.

             The findings were revealed that;

             The findings were revealed that; Vipassanã or insight meditation is a practical way to enlightenment in state of the truth by assigning the form to be emotion of Vipassana Meditation. Vipassanã or insight meditation has an important principal  is "Satipatatana 4"  that is the way to understand the reality of things without being overwhelming passion Satipattatana are 4 levels of care (Gaya), compassion, spiritual, and moral. The important barrier to vipassanã or insight meditation is 5 hindrances (Nivãrana) that are identified as mental factors that hinder progress in meditation and in our daily lives.  The 5 hindrances are (1) sensory desire : the particular type of wanting that seeks for happiness through the five senses of sight, sound, smell, taste and physical feeling  (2) Ill-will : all kinds of thought related to wanting to reject, feelings of hostility, resentment, hatred and bitterness  (3) Sloth-torpor : heaviness of body and dullness of mind which drag one down into disabling inertia and thick depression  (4) Restlessness-worry : the inability to calm the mind  (5) Doubt : lack of conviction or trust. 

             The usage of vipassanã or insight meditation to develop the Buddhist monks in Sisaket province.  The Buddhist monks  in Sisaket is one of the 10th ministry of monk including Ubon Ratchathani, Nakhon Phanom, Yasothon, Mukdahan, and AmNat Charoen. There are ecclesiastical official monks from 22 dean district, 212 dean sub district, 1,139 abbots, 9,181 monks, and 1,315 novices.  These ecclesiastical official monks have  passed vipassanã or insight meditation training from 2004 until now becomes 150-200 monks in 12 years. After they passed the training, they established Dhamma retreat centers by  Satipattatana 4 principal and Anapanasati together and "Sammã Arahang" model to develop insight meditation of monks and  Bhuddhists. 

          In the part of using Vipassanã Meditation for developing the monks who live in Sisaket province, the study the way of usage of Vipassanã or insight meditation following to the way of Satipatthana 4 adopted  from the 10th administration’s center of monk. In many ways, the study on the usage of the practices mentioned above in order to developing monks, neophyte, and people who believe in Buddhism. 1) Physical development is the way to set the rules for monks to practices concentrating such as eyes concentrate, ears concentrate, nose concentrate, tongue concentrate, finally mind and body. The way of this practice is to concentrate what mentioned above while expressing with textures, tastes, smells, sounds. 2) The development of religious precepts is the way that monks could live happily with others. 3) The development of mind is the way that monks practices to cope with unexpected situations. 4) The development of intelligent is monks need to have a positive attitude, be smart enough for unexpected situations. The ways of practices have been applied with context of the social group of monks in this province which will help monks who practice Buddhism to be able to live peacefully in society. With this kind of practice, monks will be able to follow the way of Buddhism and be able to follow policies of the administration’s center of monk in the aspect of education etc. Finally, with this practice, the development of Vipassanã Meditation in the future will be developed in the same direction.
