Abstract

ABSTRACT

This dissertation is of three objectives namely:- to analyze the Knowledge Management in modern sciences, to analyze the Knowledge Management in Theravāda Buddhism and to present the integration of the Buddhist Knowledge Management.

There are 2 types of knowledge namely tacit knowledge and explicit knowledge.  In the process of knowledge management, there is the principal in trying to convert the tacit knowledge to the explicit one by mutually exchanging of learning and interacting .  Although  the process of knowledge management consists of such means; but from the research, it is found that there is always a lot of limitation from many factors in the process which may cause the process not being able to work a hundred percent.

Comparing to the knowledge management in Buddhism, it is seen that the knowledge is inherited through the time of 2,600 years which is a very long time.  This has shown that the process of Buddhist knowledge management is of  very high efficiency.  Hence, the knowledge of Pariyatti (Scriptures), the means of practices and Paivedha are well preserved.   I, as the researcher found that the outstanding Dhamma Principles causing the process of such long inheritance of Buddhism are in the 4 groups namely:- (1) the use of Sikkhāttaya (the Threefold Learning) in creating the mutual understanding societies, (2) the creation of the learning process from within by the use of the principle of Sārāṇīyadhamma (virtues for fraternal living), (3) the process of management of Sangiti to settle questions of doctrine and to fix the text of the Scriptures into groups of the Dhammas and the Rules of  discipline of the Order, and (4) the process of the creation of the Sangha society of which having the rules of the means of practices among the monks as a whole.

From the knowledge in the field of knowledge management and the knowledge in Buddhism in the past,  I, the researcher had brought Buddhist Dhammas of the 4 groups to apply to create the model of  Buddhist Integrative Knowledge Management.  In doing this, Ikujiro Nonaka’s SECI model is applied for the means of practices of 4 modes namely:- (1) socialization, (2) Externalization, (3) Combination), and (4) Internalization.  These 4 modes are the spiral dynamic which is the infinity of knowledge creation, and the 4 groups of Buddhist Dhammas are used as the push for the energy to propel as a new model.   After that, I had the new model checked by the scholars in the mean of focus group.  It is concluded that this new Buddhist integrative knowledge management model is ready to be used in general organizations.
