The Strategy of the Ethical Development for Thai Juveniles

Abstract

Abstract

    This research has 4 objectives as follow:- 1) To study the problem issues of the juveniles. 2) To study the crime-influencing factors for juveniles. 3) To apply the Buddhist Dharma for refine the juveniles’minds. 4) To provide the suitable Buddhist principles for the juveniles and the strategy of the ethical development for juveniles. This study is a mixed research between quantitative and qualitative research. The tool used in the study is questionnaire for the quantitative research by segmenting the informants into 2 groups: - 350 sets of questionnaires were used for each of the juveniles and of their parents. In the qualitative research, using in-depth interviews, 20 savants were interviewed. The questionnaires and the questions for the in-depth interviews have been checked by 5 experts for the accuracy and appropriateness before use. The expected benefits from the research are to gain: - the juvenile-problem issues, factors causing problems to the juveniles, the solution to those problems, suitable Buddhist principles and the strategic plans which can be practically implemented in the Juvenile and Family Court over the whole country.  

   The research results are:-

             The problem issues of juveniles are body, psycho-emotion, family, friends and intimates, inspiration and life target, society and environment, crime record, background and study opportunity, deviate behavior and the national education system problems.

             The crime-influencing factors for juveniles, there are 4 factors: society factor such as friends, habitats, easy approach to contrabands and vices, etc., economy factor such as over demand of necessities, high living-cost, lack of working opportunity etc., family factor such as child-bringing-up pattern, family pattern, parent characteristic etc. and juvenile factor such as gene, maturity, illness etc. These 4 factors affect juveniles differently.

             The ways of Dharma application to juveniles, the use of Dharma can be implemented in 2 dimensions: Dharma teaching application such as mind opening, extra-curriculum activities, camping etc. and mind-refinement such as approaching to religion, creating good consciousness to juveniles etc.

             The suitable Buddhist principles are Benjasin (Five basic Buddhist precepts of moral practices), Ariyasat 4 (The four Noble Truths), Mak (Noble Eightfold Path, Ways leading to the cessation of suffering), Brahmavihara 4 (Four Buddhist virtues) for example. The researcher has found 4 strategic plans: living peacefully with friends and other people plan, ethical consciousness enriching plan, behaving morally and respecting social regulation plan and teaching good living concept plan

            The researcher has given 3 suggestions: 1) Policy suggestion such as law adaptation, national plan, long-term plan etc., 2) Operation suggestion such as entering temple, novice ordination, moral camp etc., 3) Research suggestion such as The ethical consciousness construction for juveniles, to produce qualified personnel for the country, The Juvenile training strategy, giving opportunity to do daily good things as a good life base, The inspiration for juveniles to live with right direction and target,  The religion activity creation to support the moral camp for juveniles for example.
