An Analytical Study of Sense-Objects (Emotions) in Theravãda Buddhism

Abstract

                                                          ABSTRACT

The purpose of this thesis is to analytical study of Sense-Objects (Emotions) in Theravãda Buddhism on three objects: 1) to study emotions in the contexts of Theravada Buddhism, 2) to study how to recognize and control emotions in the opinions of the Theravada Buddhism, and 3) Analysis of emotion recognitions and how to control the emotional issues including the deployments in the development of life in the opinions of the Theravada Buddhism. This research is a qualitative research study focuses on the documents, such as the primary survey from the Tipitaka Commentary, the secondary survey from the academic texts of Buddhism, documents, and related researches.

The results of the study reveal that: the emotion is sense-objects or external sense-fields, there are six kinds: 1) visible objects, 2) sound, 3) smell, 4) taste, 5) tangible objects and 6) mind-objects. There is advice for the progress in practice called the Basis of merit making as taught by the the Buddha as follows: 1) Charity or Generosity (Dâna), 2) Morality (Sîla) and 3) Development of meditation which is of two kinds, namely: tranquility of the mind and spiritual insight (Bhâvanâ).

The practitioner must avoid all evils, fulfill good and purify one’s own minds. If one cultivates by practicing step by step in each method and the training must endure what was attained the peaceful, the sublime, the cool and the bliss. Because really happiness and peace, it is unnecessary for him to seek for it from other places, but he can find it in his mind because all sufferings or happiness spring up from the mind.

In conclusion, in order to purify the mind and to make it clean from the emotions of greed, anger and infatuation. The teachings of the Buddha indicate that you have to follow three bases of meritorious action by following the sequence as follows: start with largesse as a renunciation frugality, jealousy in wealth. You must have the intent to make a real sacrifice with no hope of return, and then follow the precepts. This will be the practices to control your body and speech and will make you not to behave immoral as well as laws. When you have pure precepts, it will lead you to further advanced practices including Bhavanamaya. It is a mental training under meditation to make the mental stability, stolid, peace, calm, and extinguish all emotions goes down. This emotional intelligence is a complete basis of Theravada Buddhism.
