AN ANALYTICAL STUDY OF THE ROLE OF KALYÃNAMITTA IN KAMMATTHÃNA RETREAT

Abstract

ABSTRACT

The purposes of this research were 1) to study the general aspect of friend, qualification and the virtue of Kanyãnamitta in Buddhism, 2) to study the concept and the importance of Kammatthãna retreat in Buddhism, and 3) to analyze the importance, virtue and role of Kanyãnamitta in Kammatthãna retreat including how to apply in daily life. Qualitative research with documentary study was used for analyzing the related content to Kanyãnamitta and Kammatthãna retreat. The document that used for synthesis the role of Kanyãnamitta in Kammatthãna. The research results were as follows:

1. Friend was divided into two meanings, friend in Buddhism was the one who maybe older or having the same age that always be kind, take care and share to each other. Friend in general meaning was the one who associate with and may stay close to each other. Friend in Buddhism aspect had higher friendliness than the general meaning. The qualification of Kanyãnamitta was a person who full of Dhamma called Sappurisa-dhamma which showed quality of a good man. The virtues of Kanyãnamitta consisted of Brahmavihãra, Yonisomanasikãra, Sangahavatthu-dhamma, and Sappurisa-dhamma. In addition, Gharãvãsa-dhamma, Disã and Kanyãnamitta-dhamma were usually used for social relationship. The characteristic of Kanyãnamitta in Kammatthãna retreat was the one who full of seven Kanyãnamitta-dhamma and eight qualifications which consisted of belief, self-controlled, listening, charity, effort, mindfulness, concentration and wisdom. Kanyãnamitta was also full of three main worth which being the source of the four noble paths, to make completely the four noble paths, and being for the holy life (Brahmacariya).

2. Kammatthãna was the setting of work insight of mind and the method of practicing to be consciousness and followed every consideration. There were two types of Kammatthãna in Buddhism. Samatha-kammatthãna was the method and practice of concentrating the mind, and Vipassanã- kammatthãna was the method and practice of insight development which showed the understanding of the three characteristics (Tilakkhana).

3. Five importance of Kanyãnamitta were: originate the way to be the best life – know the path to go – being the compass of life – having dhamma equally or higher – lead to see the right view. Kanyãnamitta had seven Kanyãnamitta-dhamma for being their virtues which were: be lovely – respectful – pleasingly – positive talking – patience – insight teaching – guide the right way. In the past, Buddha was being the best model of Kanyãnamitta who taught his disciple to enter enlightenment. In present, the master monk who had been successful in teaching Kammatthãna retreat always used Kanyãnamitta-dhamma while they were teaching Kammatthãna. In the aspect of application, each aspect of Kanyãnamitta-dhamma was applied in the real situation that occurred in daily life.
