Abstract

Abstract

This thesis aimed to study the Buddha’s Prophecies as appeared in Theravada Buddhism. The study divided the content into three parts: the first is a study of Buddha’s Prophecies that appear in Theravada Buddhism, explaining the key aspects and interpretations of the Buddha’s Prophecies; the second part is a study on the problem in today's society consistent with the Buddha’s Prophecies; and the third part is a study of the principles applied to the problems in today's society.

The first part of research concluded that the Buddha’s Prophecies appeared in the Buddhist Holy Scripture, Tripitaka, as words of the Buddha, and appeared in the Buddhist Commentaries describing the content of the Buddha’s Prophecies about the sixteen dreams of King Passenadikosala. The essential characteristics of the Buddha’s Prophecies included comparisons, interpretations, and surreal or abstract representation, with metaphors of the problems in the future era. The researcher classified the problems into four types:  natural environment, personal ethics on sexual behavior and piety, social, political and economic problems , and Buddhists.

The second part is a study of the problem in today's society, consistent with the Buddha’s Prophecies. The issues that affect people in society and consistent with the Buddha’s Prophecies can also be grouped into four types: 1) natural environment, 2) ethical problem, 3) moral and economic degeneration, and 4) religious problem.

The third part focuses on applications of the Dhamma principles to solve the problems in society, consistent with the Buddha’s Prophecies, adopted in accordance with the problems that actually arise. So, we can see that the principles of Dhamma in Buddhism , when clearly studied and understood was to understood, can be taken to resolve the natural environment problem, lack of ethical issues, political and economic problems.
