Abstract
This research consisted of three purposes. They were to (1) study Summakammunta (Right Occupation), (2) study Dhamma principles which supported Summakammunta, and (3) study the importance of Summakammunta to earn a living at present. This research focused on details from Tripitaka, document, texts, various academics, and related research. After that, data related to Summakammunta in Theravada Buddhism, Dhamma principles supporting Summakammunta, and the importance of Summakammunta for earning a living were researched leading to research conclusion and suggestions. The results were found as follows:
Details from Vinayapitaka, Suttuntapitaka, Apithampitaka, Attakatha, and other scriptures had a similar meaning of Summakammunta. Summakammunta meant right action, or physical action which did not harm the others, in other words, it was action leading to happiness and physical action with knowledge and comprehension with complete consideration before action resulting in performer’s development to the middle way for achieving the highest way that wasan excellent path, a way tobe free from evil.
The Dhamma principles usupporting Smmakammunta were Hiri-ottuppa, Wirut 3, Wutthitham 4, Sungkahawatthu 4, Saraniyatham 6, Suppurisatham 7, and being away from carelessness. These Dhamma principles were concordant, and supported each other both in a direct and indirect way in order to let performers achieve and practice suitably to their life for a complete goodness, that was, Nibbana.
Smmakammunta was considered the most important Dhamma in the noble eightfold path. It was Silasikkha which was a vital base for concentration and wisdom. The happiness or suffering of people was from intention both from the concrete, and abstract. Those who did the right thing or led their life with a good behavior achieved happiness and development. In contrast, those who did the wrong thing, Micchakammunta (wrong occupation), deteriorated into happiness and development resulting in various problems of life.
