The Attitude of Students on the Learning and Teaching of Buddhist subject at Primary Schools, in Thonburi District, Bangkok.

Abstract

 The objectives of this research were, firstly to study the Thonburi District, Bangkok primary school pupils’ attitudes towards Buddhism learning and teaching, secondly, to compare the pupils’ attitudes towards Buddhism learning and teaching and thirdly to study the suggestions towards the Buddhism studying method for the primary schools in Thonburi District, Bangkok.The research methodology was the quantitative research using survey method, collecting data from 269 samples, using Krejcie& Morgan’s table. The samples were pupils studying in the primary 4 – 6 levels from 6 primary schools in Thonburi District, Bangkok. Data were analyzed by frequency, percentile, means, standard deviation (SD), t-test and One-way ANOVA, setting statistical significant level at 0.05

Findings were as follows;

              1.  The Thonburi District, Bangkok Primary schools, level 4-6 students’ attitudes towards Buddhism studying collectively and by each aspect were at high level. The details on five aspects, from high to low levels were consecutively as follows; the curriculum content, learning and teaching activities, teaching media, atmosphere and environment for learning and measurement and evaluation.

              2.  Comparing pupils’ attitudes by sex, age and class levels, it was found that pupils with different sex had different attitudes towards curriculum content at different level. Pupils with different ages had different attitudes towards measurement and evaluation at different level. Pupils at different class levels had different attitudes towards curriculum content and measurement and evaluation at different levels. Pupils had no different attitudes towards the rest aspects.

              3.  Recommendations about Buddhism learning and teaching at Thonburi District, Bangkok Primary Schools were that;

              As for curriculum contents, there should arrange the appropriate contents and more learning activities for the class levels

              As for learning activities, there should increase activities about Buddhism, dialogue between pupils and resource persons should be arranged to enhance pupils’ expression and also meditation practice should be emphasized before every class.

              As for teaching media, administrators should support and promote Buddhism learning and teaching, providing morality rooms, supporting teachers to create up-to-date and interesting instructional media.

              As for atmosphere and learning environment, there should change learning environment from classrooms to open field, under the trees and calm nature around the schools.

              As for measurement and evaluation, the measurement and evaluation methods should be improved to meet the objectives by using more different tools than just learning and teaching method.
