The Roles of Sangha in Sangha Administration in Thongphaphumi District, Kanchanaburi Province

Abstract

               The objectives of this research are 1) to study the roles of Sangha leaders in Sangha administration; 2) to specifically study the roles of Sangha leaders in Sangha administration in Thongphaphumi district, Kanchanaburi province, classified by personal factors; and 3) to analyze the problems, obstacles and guidelines for Sangha administration in Thongphaphumi district, Kanchanaburi province. The research is descriptive one with sampling on Sangha administrators in Thongphaphumi district, Kanchanaburi province totaling 226 in number, drawn by using Krejecie and Morgan Table.  The tool used for collecting data was questionnaire focusing on the roles of Sangha community in Sangha administration in Thongphaphumi district, Kanchanaburi province.

              Program for social science research was employed for data analysis by using statistical techniques such as frequencies, percentage, average, standard deviation, for describing data from variables or personal characteristics.  The analysis was also done through t-test for analysis the hypotheses in order to test the average difference between the two groups and f-test (One-way ANOVA) for testing the difference between the averages from three or more groups.  The significant difference was not at .05 level.

 

The results of this study are concluded as follows:

 

              The roles of Sangha leaders in Thongphaphumi district, Kanchanaburi province is found that most of monks and novices administrators have rated the overall roles of Sangha leaders in Sangha administration at high level (  = 3.67). When taken into consideration in each aspect, it is found that monks and novices have opined the administrative and construction roles of Sangha leaders in Sangha administration in Thongphaphumi district, Kanchanaburi province at high level, whereas social welfare is rated at moderate level.

              However, the Sangha administration faces difficulty in providing administrative and budget support as the location is situated in upcountry area. The scarcity of this crucial resource causes great impact on propagating Buddhism, Dhamma teaching and administrating the Sangha communities in this area.

              The suggestions for Sangha leaders in Sangha administration in Thongphaphumi district, Kanchanaburi province are that there should have joint agreement focusing on administrative strictness especially in monks’ and novices’ behavior.  Educational fund should be provided to support monks and novices education.  The lay Buddhists should be persuaded to support educational fund and materials for monks, novices and youth.  The preaching and training courses should be provided for common Buddhists and harmonious activities between monastery and village should be conducted.
