This thesis had three objectives: (1) to study the concept of Tiracchanavijja (Pseudo Sciences) in Theravada Buddhism ( 2) to study the present situation and problems of Tiracchanavijja (Pseudo Sciences) in Theravada Buddhism in Thailand, and (3) to practice the principles of mental emancipation from Tiracchanavijja (Pseudo Sciences). Results of the study were described below.
Meaning of Tiracchanavijja (Pseudo Sciences) in Theravada Buddhism. “Tiracchanavijja is worldly knowledge, low art, or pseudo sciences which are an obstacle on the way to Nibbana (Enlightenment). It is a subject that prevents the practitioner from achieving what should be achieved according to Dhamma-Vinaya or Buddhist Teachings. The subject of Tiracchanavijja (Pseudo Sciences) in Theravada Buddhism is fragmented and scattered here and there in Buddhist scriptures. In Theravada Buddhism, the subject of Tiracchanavijja can be divided into four categories: (1) Astrology, (2) Horoscope, (3) Secret Objects or Amulets, (4) Voodooist and Spiritual Medium. At present, there are rites and rituals related to Tiracchanavijja are being performed in Thai, which is often associated with benefits as an incentive to motivate people to understand more about various faces of Buddhism. However, there are dark sides of Tiracchanavijja as well, which is involving superstitious beliefs and activities, distancing us from the real Buddhism and acting as an obstacle on the way to Nibana.
The present situation and problems of Tiracchanavijja (Pseudo Sciences) in Theravada Buddhism in Thailand. It was found that Tiracchanavijja (Pseudo Sciences) in Theravada Buddhism in Thailand arises because of the influence of Brahmanism that reveres deities and creates occultism or voodooist earlier than the presence of Buddhism leading to the following problems: (1) social conflict, (2) false beliefs, and (3) superstitions and preoccupation with Tiracchanavijja in contemporary society.
Practices leading to the self-emancipation from Tiracchanavijja. To free oneself from Tiracchanavijja, one may follow the Threefold Learning Principle: Morality, Meditation and Wisdom because essentially this threefold principle is important to get rid of greed, anger, delusion and can resolve the issues of false beliefs and superstitions, especially those related to occultism, voodooism, animism, and talismans. The Threefold Learning Principle can also lead to mental development and freedom from Tiracchanavijja eventually. |
