The study entitled “Applying five precepts and five ennobling virtues to promote the morality and ethic for the students, a case studies of Ban Khamkha School, Trakanphuetphon District, Ubonratchathani province” aims: 1) to study the principles of five precepts and five ennobling virtues in Theravada Buddhism for promoting the morality and ethic, 2) to study the state of instructional management with the principle of five precepts and five ennobling virtues for the morality and ethic of School and 3) to study applying the principle of five precepts and five ennobling virtues for promoting the morality and ethic of the students. This research is qualitative, emphasizing on documentary and field researches with interview.
The result of research was found that:
1) The Five precepts and five ennobling virtues are the principles of
doctrines that match and support each other; namely, one who observes five precepts has to also follow five ennobling virtues. The former should be abstained, the latter should be practiced. Both of these principles promote and support the fundamental morality and ethic for good living and becoming perfect human beings; moreover, they lead good effect to society.
2) For the management of teaching and learning five precepts and
five ennobling virtues for promoting the morality and ethic of Ban Khamkha School, 1)the administrators and teachers have given an importance to instructional management with training and developing, applying new knowledge and the principles of Buddhist doctrines for integrative instruction, teaching the activities of several projects, improving the landscape to be the Buddhist School 2) the executives and instructors are good sample for living lives, 3) they promote and support communities so that the people may participate in planning the operation and development of school, they are also special lecturers in training the students, 4) there are activities for moral and ethic promotion; such as, Dhamma camp, Sumer Samanera Ordination, taking the students to a temple on the occasion of Buddhist Important Days and to the resource as well as religious holy places of communities for learning the significant activities of them including the Buddhist arts, tradition and culture and 5) for the students, one of them is elected to be a representative with the rule of revealing, purity, justice and democracy, the elected one becomes a committee of the students who participates in all activities of school.
3) The utilization of five precepts and five ennobling virtues
for promoting the morality and ethic of the students in Ban Khamkha School with integrating those doctrines to all the subjects, being a good sample, activities - participation of communities and variety of teaching media helps the students to have knowledge and to understand how to follow the principles of five precepts and five ennobling virtues. They realize merit, demerit, virtue, disadvantage, good or bad thing, loving – kindness and compassion, existing in carefulness. They understood the principles of five precepts that should be avoided, and five ennobling which should be followed. These are the basic doctrines for living lives of human beings; namely, 1) Panatipata veramani = abstaining from the destruction of life; the students have loving kindness and sub consciousness, not troubling themselves, others and creatures, but helping their family, friends and animals by preparing and giving food to domestic pets, when they have a chance, 2) Adinnadana veramani = abstaining from taking what is not given, the students have effort to study, not copying home works from their friends, submitting assignments in time, they have honesty and self disciplines, when they found any precious thing lost both inside and outside of the school, they always bring and give it to the teacher or the head of community in order to look for its owner, they knew to earn and save money while they were studying, 3) Kamesu micchacara veramani = abstaining from sexual misconduct, the students restrained themselves in body, in speech and in mind, gave respect and honor to their family, teachers and friends, not teasing the friends of opposite and same sex and joined hands to solve a problem, when they met with any obstacle, if they themselves couldn’t do it, they asked for an advice from their teachers, guardians or the leader of community, and they had been always helped well, 4) Musavada veramani = abstaining from falsehood, the students have a contract in the school to speak politely and gently, not quarreling with each other, not making noise, not disturbing others in the school and 5) Suramerayamajjapamadatthana veramani = abstaining from all kinds of intoxicants that cloud the mind and cause carelessness, the students realized the harms of addicting drugs, they participated in campaign against the drugs, chose to consume useful things, not being luxurious, and live their lives with heedfulness.
About some of problems and obstacles in the school; such as, the absence from school of the students who came from a broken family or who were addicted by advanced technology and modern media instruments which influenced and made them slaves, if they used them in a wrong way, or who lived in the community in which there are Apayamukhas (causes of ruins) i.e. Gambling and drugs etc., these problems can be solved by means of remedial and enrichment instruction, being trained in summer Dhamma camp, educating them to understand and to participate in the Buddhist activities regularly, giving good friendship to them and strengthening the knowledge and understanding of five precepts and five ennobling virtues. These can promote and support the morality and ethics of students for their daily living. As mentioned, the temples, villages and schools must give importance and promote the activities of morality and ethics.
