Abstract

This research aims to study (1) principles of Sangahavathu which is applied in Sutantapitaka by Hathakagapati and (2) history of from the past until the present.

                  It is found as follows:

                  1.   Hathakagapati with moral and excellent intelligence can achieve A-naa-kaa-mee (never return). He has ability to propagate Dhamma leading to Buddhists’ faiths and respect although he is only a layman. He is a main post of Buddhism. Because of his splendid Dhamma presentation, he is appointed the best support of Sangahavathu by Buddha. The principle of Hathakagapati in Sutatapitaka is found that he talks to Buddha that Lord Buddha I will support alms to those who want, I will speak sweetly to those who want sweet words, I will give useful behavior to those who want good behavior, and I will give equal balance to those who has equal balance. Because of this, he is considered the best of Sangahavathu.

                  2.   Guidelines of applying Hathakagapati’s Sangahavathu principles to daily life are found that (1) about living, he has a purpose for living which should be followed by Buddhists,
(2) about occupation, he always applies Buddhist doctrines to his own job in order to achieve success, (3) about living in the society which is very vital. He can live happily in the society and gets admiration from Buddha that he is  the best of Sangahavathu, and  (4) about Buddhism  propagation, he applies Sangahavathu to his life as a principle of life resulting in happiness, growth, and success. After death, he enjoys his happiness in Brahma world for a very long time. Thus, Buddhists in the present or in the future should study his roles and apply his Dhamma doctrines to their daily lives leading to personal uses, family uses, and social uses
