This research aims to study (1) the principles and methods of proclaiming Buddha’s Dhamma proclamation appeared in the scriptures of Theravada Buddhism, (2) the principles and methods of monks’ Dhamma proclamation appeared in the scriptures of Theravada Buddhism, and (3) the Dhamma application and methods of Dhamma teaching propagation of Buddhist monks in Thailand.
The results were found as follows:
Buddha proclamation consisted of three processes: contents or subjects, students or listeners, and teaching approaches. In the past, Buddha propagated Buddhism by himself and sending his followers everywhere. Buddhism propagation was his main task. He did his duties until his last breath. He applied varieties of teaching his followers suitable to their abilities. At the end of Buddha’s instruction, disciples achieved Nibbana, were enlightened, accepted three gems, and showed their intention to be Buddhists according to their faith.
Buddha’s disciples propagated Dhamma by following Buddha’s steps. Buddha’s Dhamma was disseminated everywhere. Besides, a number of Buddhism believers increase. Buddha’s disciples were a very vital organization for propagating the army of Dhamma led by the Buddha as King of Dhamma. Prasareebutra was appointed as a right Dhamma Minister, while Pramahamokkulana a left Dhamma Minister. They had a role play in disseminating Buddhism. Only important disciples in the past were selected as samples for propagating Buddhism so that the whole pictures, roles, and methods of disseminating Buddhism were considered.
Many monks in Thailand had a very vital role in propagating Dhamma. Buddhatas Bhikkhu focused on propagating complex Dhamma. Prapromkunaporn (P.A. Payutto) disseminated Dhamma accepted worldwide both in the country and abroad. Prathamkosajarn (Prayun Thammajitto) propagated academic Dhamma. While Prarachthamnites (Payom Kulyano) focused on simple Dhamm which was a foundation of precepts and ethics in the society.
Proclaiming Buddha’s Dhamma, and investing moral, ethics and expected value to Buddhists, pupils, students and Thai descendants in this age was based on monks who had a vital role to proclaiming Buddhism. Thus, monks had to comprehend how to proclaim Dhamma and apply Dhamma in the real setting for a right practice leading to happiness of actors and society as a whole. Thus, monks who did the above mentioned roles had to study to see through media literacy because the technology was developed so quickly that there was an information overthrow. At this age, there were many ways of communication such as personal media, and specific media. Besides, monks had to use media for proclaiming Dharma widely. More importantly, the systems and ways of proclaiming Buddha which was a major role to keep Buddhism grow up. It was the first task that Buddha thought and created until his last breath. After Buddha’s death, his disciples proclaimed Dhamma and taught Dhamma according to the systems, and Buddha’s guidelines respectively. |
