This thesis entitled “An analytical study of metaphor in Phathomsombodhi: A cognitive linguistic approach” was aiming to study the conceptual metaphors in ‘Phrapathomsombodhi’ and to analytically study the process of semantic mappings in ‘Phrapathomsombodhi’. The data were collected from ‘Phrapathomsombodhi’ written by The Supreme Patriarch H.R.H. Prince Paramanujitajinorasa for 29 Chapters. The data analysis was based on a Cognitive linguistics theory.
Findings of the study were as follows:
1. Forms of the language as the conceptual metaphors in ‘Phrapathomsombodhi’ were divided into 9 categories, i.e., 1) Human metaphors, 2) Animal metaphors, 3)Plant metaphors, 4) Object metaphors, 5) Construction metaphors, 6) Action metaphors, 7) War metaphors, 8) Nature metaphors, and 9) Supernatural metaphors.
2. The Semantic process of metaphors in ‘Phrapathomsombodhi’, Showing the concept of the language user, shown by the process of Semantic Mappings between source domain and target domain of meanings, as Ontological and Epistemic Correspondences. Besides, it was generally concluded that concepts of ‘Phrapathomsombodhi’ were basically based on the bodily experience, sensual perception, environment as well as dharma, social, and cultural experiences.
