Astract
The objectives of this thesis were to 1) study the impurities in Theravãda Buddhism, and 2) analyze the elimination of impurities and virtue without impurities in Theravãda Buadhism – a qualitative study of which its emphasis is on the paper based study made through a collection of information from Tripitaka, exegesis, and related documents before taking them into analysis, synthesis, and descriptive.
The study results revealed that impurities in Theravãda Buddhism mean sadness, despondency, and bereavement. Vinayapitaka means violation of Sikkhapada (a disciplinary rule), which was prescribed by Lord Buddha. Abhidhamma Pitaka means the nature of the mind which flows to the power of passion. Impurities consist of 2 types : the external impurities and the internal impurities. Dangers of impurities are sadness, despondency, and bereavement and suffering of mind. Causes of impurities are anger, hatred, jealousy, laziness, flaunt, illusion, greed, and not knowing what is right and wrong. Goals for elimination of impurities are to bring happiness into both this life and the next,
Ways to eliminate impurities from mind are to follow the practices of Ariyamagga 8 principles, Ovãdapãtimokkha principles, the principles of goodness, and the principles, of good Dhamma, in order to lead our lives with peace and wisdom.
It was found from the study that elimination of impurities led us to receiving of virtue, living our lives closer ot Dhamma, not dieing from goodness, releasing from the suffering, being born in the better life, and the most virtue of all is not wandering in the Round of Existence. |
