ABSTRACT
The objectives of this research are to analytically study the concept of Naga King in Theravada Buddhist Scriptures which are divided into 2 parts, namely :- 1) to study the concept of Naga King in Theravada Buddhist Scriptures. 2) to analytically Study the concept of Naga King in Theravada Buddhist Scriptures.
From the research result it is found that The Naga Kings is one kind creatures of the world originated from 2 actions namely , (1) , the good actions and (2) , the bad actions, such as , the wish to be Naga Kings after observing the precepts namely the violation of the disciplines by having 4 kinds of birth namely, 1.) womb-born creatures (Jalabuja) 2.) egg-born creatures (Jalabuja)3.)moisture-born creatures (Samsedaja) 4.) spontaneously born creatures(Opapatika).After They were already born, They lived under the administration of the great Naga King named Virupakkha who was the leader of Nagas and one of the Four Great Kings (Chatulokapala).After they were already born then the “Naga World” named Bhogavati,Vasa City or Hirannavati arising to welcome the Naga Kings. Such the paradise (Vimana) will be in various places such as the river, the mountain, the sea, and under the river etc. which that city have been in many place such as, river , mountain , ocean , and under a river , etc.
The Naga Kings in Theravada Buddhist Scriptures is developed from the civilization in Sindhu River Basin. This is under the belief in the doctrines of the recluses (samanas) that is to believe that Naga Kings is the world animal under the actions or be under the rules of actions, not being born from the God ‘s creation. The birth of Naga King is regard as “the state of loss and woe”, but it is not the miserable plane of birth, because Naga King was born only in a happy plane. There are also many proofs about Naga Kings. That Naga Kings is the worldly being which is really in existence. For example in the proof from historical evidence and the Buddhist Logics, it is found that the term Naga King is of the meaning of being symbol which means the fulfillment, the power ,the goodness etc.
On the contrary regarding the values ,it is found that Naga King is of the important values in protecting Buddhism. At the same time, Naga Kings is also the practices of Dhamma to attain a state higher than the present one. Besides, the study of Naga Kings give us many values such as the working of business with good care, the practices of Dhamma etc. The Buddhist Doctrines teach the human being to play the roles to Naga King both in accepting the existence of Naga King and treating Naga King without persecuting one another.
