Abstract

Abstract

The purpose of this study is three-fold: (1) To study the consumption culture of the Northeast; (2) To study the consumption concepts according to the philosophy of sufficiency economy; (3) To study the consumption of the Northeast according to the philosophy of sufficiency economy.

Documentary research was used for this study. The researcher searched the information from the speech of his Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej as well as academic papers, researches, theses, and other related studies. The study involves data gathering, analysis, synthesis, and interpretation of the original information.

The results show that the consumption culture of the Northeast and the consumption concepts according to the philosophy of sufficiency economy are mostly in the same direction. These concepts include (1) Natural sources of food (2) Consumption by season (3) Methods of cooking (4) Food preservation (5) Living condition. In addition, the choice of food is influenced by their culture, ceremony, and beliefs.

On the other hand, there are numbers of aspects need to be developed in order to be in line with the philosophy of sufficiency economy. In particularly, the issue of ‘Human Capital’ should be considered. There are 2 factors that influence the consumption of the Northeast. These are (1) Internal factors. The following knowledge should be educated: The nutrition principles; The proper raw materials for cooking; The potential food hazards and where their sources; The right food for sick people; The hygienic practice; The right view on cultures, ceremony, and beliefs; and The right view on consuming raw food. (2) External factors, They are the influences of the cultures outside the community.

Once all of the above aspects are developed, the consumption of the Northeast will be in line with the philosophy of sufficiency economy. The benefits of the development will go toward individuals, society, and the nation.
