ABSTRACT

This research aimed to study on motivation of ordination of  Venerable Asiti, one of the Buddha’s very important disciple. There were 3 objectives of the study : 1) to study the concept and theory of motivation; 2) to study the motivation influencing Venerable Asiti to be ordained as appeared in Tharavada Buddhism ; 3) to study the application of motivation to inspire the Thai youth to be ordained.

The study result on the concept and theory of motivation research that the motivation was defined as the condition that stimulated a person’s behavior exposure by using both inside and outside drive as well as other related factors. The motivator had to express his or her competence in using such concept and theory to understand people and situations in proper manner.

Concerning the factors influencing on Venerable Asiti’s ordination, who was one of the Buddha’s 80 Chief Disciples, it was precise that the sense of gratefulness and of finding peace in mind effected by the bore of lay life. Other related influences were personal character, strong intention to be ordained.

The study also showed the results on analyzing the Venerable Asiti’s motivation influencing on his ordination. It showed that the influences involved consisted of his faith in the Buddha’s 3 marvels namely, marvel of psychic power, marvel of mind-reading, and marvel of teaching.

For the application of Venerable Asiti’s motivation of ordination to the present Thai youth, the threefold learnings were recommended: These Threefold Learnings (Trisikkha) would be the mechanism of conserving and sustaining Buddhism. It was also recommended from the study that all kinds of benefits : personal social and religions ones as well as the levels of benefits at the beginning, the intermediate and the advanced levels of applications a level be concerned. It was proposed that those who followed his motivation concept would reach Nibbana as well.
