Abstract
This thesis had three objectives: 1) to study the context in Thai society; 2) to study the definitions of the Four Foundations and unanimity establishment in Thai society and; 3) to apply the four Foundations to unanimity establishment in Thai society.
The study involved documentary research. The data gathering was carried out from Tipitaka texts, related commentary, academic textbooks, documents, and research work. The data gathered was analyzed and synthesized of which the results were explained in form of descriptive presentation.
The study results revealed that:
The freedom status in Thailand was over-used. Emotional more than reasonable justification was applied. The social conflict was caused from different attitudes beliefs and way of life. Such conflict originated disputes and disagreement in Thai society and led to animosity in Thai society. This also caused national insecurity instead of hospitality formerly practiced. People at the present moment longed for restoring unanimity to occur.
The study on the Four Foundations’ definition revealed that practicing them could increase one’s tranquil sage to happen in the society. One would find no arrogance, nor defilement existing in one particular individual. He or she would gain wisdom to solve any problem. The Four Foundations consisted of Paññā (Wisdom), Sacca(Truthfulness), )Cāga(Liberality), Upasama(Tranquility). Theses could be applied to help establishing unanimity and peacefulness to be firmly set up in the society.
The concept of applying the Four Foundations to Thai society revealed that unanimity was looked forward to by the people. They were ready to act righteous performance by following suitable regulations, commandments and morality to drive the country to become prosperous. Wisdom as a tool of self functioning was anticipated. Non-violence to eliminate threats, agitation and turmoil would depend on unanimity establishment in the society from which peaceful happiness would be sustained. |
