Abstract
This aims of this thesis 1) to study historical background of Uposatha in Buddhism 2) to study style of Uposatha in Thailand, and 3) to study value of Uposatha in present Thai society. the result of this research are:
The origin of Uposatha Hall is of two types namely :-. 1 The bound Sīmā called Baddha Sīmā which is of 4 types namely :- 1) Khanḍa Sīmā , 2) Mahā Sīmā, 3) Double Sīmā and 4) Nadīpāra Sīmā .The tieing are of Baddha Sīmāis called The infix of the Nimita stones. In The Buddhism Law, it is mentioned that the Nimita stones are them with 8 binds of material namely:- the mountain, the stones, the forest, the tree, the anthill, theroad, the river or the pool of water etc.and the unbound Sīmā whichis called A baddhasīmā which in called A baddhasīmā whith is of 3 types, namely ;- 1. Gāma Sīmā, sattaphantara Sīmā Udakkakhepa Sīmā
In term of the historical background, King Bimbisara once saw the adherents of another religion got together to listen to Dhamma in every half-month and it brought to the strong faith. He told that activity to the Buddha. The Buddha permitted the Sangha to have a recitation of the Fundamental Precepts. Then the Sangha performed the Fundamental Precepts any day and anywhere. The Buddha, having known this, regulated the Sangha to cite the Fundamental Precepts on every half-month in definite area called agreement-boundary which could be marked by eight signs of materials i.e. mountain, stone, forest, tree, molehill, road, river, or basin.
The results are found as follows: styles of Uposathas in four parts of Thailand consist of fifteen styles. The researcher study specific style by field survey and secondary data study. A Study of Style and Value of Uposatha in Theravada Buddhism, there were different Thai architecture which change and transform in time pass.and depends on the head of the monks in communities.
There are five aspects of values on Uposatha. Value in the aspect of a formal act (Sanghakamma) according to the Dhammavinaya consists of four values 1) Apalokanakamma i.e. a consultation 2) Yatti i.e. a motion such as a recitation of the Fundamental Precepts 3) Yattidutiyakammavaca i.e. asking the opinion in the meeting such as Kathina recitation, 4) Yatticatutthakammavaca i.e. asking the opinion for three times such as giving ordination. Value in the aspect of truth is the value of those who support the construction of the Uposatha. Those who could get the construction of Uposatha completed must have the Four Foundation in mind (Adhitthana Dhamma) i.e. wisdom (Panna), truthfulness (Sacca), liberality (Caga), and tranquility (Upasama). Value in the aspect of goodness is the result of donation for construction the Uposatha. It is known as the five result of making merit which consists of 1) Kittisaddo i.e. good reputation 2) Visarado i.e. being brave in association 3) Piyo Devamanussanam i.e. being beloved to humans and Devata 4) Alammulaho Kalum Kato i.e. being conscious in dying 5) Sugatiparayano i.e. having the happy state in future. |
