Abstract
This Thesis “A Study of Adhimokkha in Vipassanābhāvanā in Accordance with the Four Foundations of Mindfulness” has two objectives. They are to study the Practicing of Vipassanābhāvanā according to the Four Foundations of Mindfulness as appeared in the Theravāda, Buddhist Scriptures as well as to study the Adhimokkha Vipassanupakilesa as also stated in these Theravāda Buddhist Scriptures. The Study took informations from the Theravāda Tipitaka, Commentaries, Tikas and other related Documents. Informations were then gathered up, analyzed, and descriptively put under the supervision of Thesis Advisers and Specific Vipassanābhāvanā Expertise.
The Research found that The Four Foundations of Mindfulness are comprised of one Rupa and three Nāmas whose Practicing Process is called “Bhavanā”. The Digha-nikaya Commentary states that…by not touching any phenomenon on the Body (Kayā), the Vedanā (Feelings), the Citta (the Mental conditions), and those Dhammas (Mind Objects), there should never be a “Bhavanā”. Therefore, the Four Foundations of Mindfulness Process is to be mindful on Objects of Rupa - Nāma notified as the Three Noble Truths of mundane Acknowledgements experienced before in Sila-visuddhi which is the Noting on Rupa-Nāma as Dukkhasacca, the cause of Dukkhasacca as the Samudayasacca experienced in the Kankhāvitarana-visuddhi, the Makkasacca as the appropriate path experiencing in the Maggamaggananadassana-visuddhi, which is the knowledge of actualizing the Tilakkhana of Impermanency, Suffering, and Non-self attributes of Rupa-Nāmas.
Adhimokkha in Vipassanābhāvanā is one of the Ten Vipassanupakilesas. It is the Resolution to keep attached to 9 other favourable Insights (10 Vipassanupakilesas including Itself)
In practicing the Vipassanābhāvanā following the Mindfulness Concept, Adhimokkha is a kind of Dhammānupassana as stated in the Patisambhidamagga, Khuddakanikaya under the topic of Dhammuddhajja namely the “Uddhacca: restlessness, distraction”. The reason is that “those afflicted with this sort of Phenomenon are contented with their own performance within the Taruna-Udayabbayanana to the degree of undertaking the non-magga as the magga (the improper route as the proper route). This kind of Restlessness in Dhamma is subtle and cannot be realized by normal pondering.
The process to treat Adhimokkha is to note this kind of Phenomenon as just Rupa-Nama that subsides to Impermanency, Suffering, and Non-self. Frequently keep noting on It “awaringly” as simply a kind of Rupa-Nama, at their Six Sense-bases, such as (1) Just Seeing (Haen Nor), (2) Just Hearing (Dai Yin Nor), (3) Just Smelling (Dai Kinn Nor), (4) Just Taste (Roath Nor), (5)Just Contacting (Took Nor), (6)Just Thinking (Kid Nor), can gradually bring the Meditator across this Adhimokkha barrier.
