An Analytical Study of English Collocations in Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill (English International Program)

บทคัดย่อ

           The objectives of this study are (1) to investigate the usage of English collocations of keywords used in Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill, and (2) to study the types of combinations relating to the usage of English collocations of keywords used in Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill.

             Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill, self-improvement and personal development literature, was selected. The data was initially collected and analyzed by application of the software Ant Conc 3.4.4.0 (Windows) which was developed by L. Anthony. The study was followed by utilizing Microsoft Excel 2013 data base, Oxford Collocations Dictionary for students of English (2012), and Longman Collocations Dictionary and Thesaurus (2013).

             The results derived from the current study through a documentary and qualitative method revealed a list of keywords which are most frequently used in Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. From the selected top 50 most frequent keywords, the collocations of each keyword were identified. Only English collocations that met specified criteria were selected and categorized into 17 types of combinations relating to the usage of English Collocations.

             The results revealed as follows:

             1) The keyword mind had the most frequent usage of English collocations in Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill with the frequency of 91 or 14.30%. Among the frequency of 91 occurrences, the results were as follows: (1) subconscious mind with the frequency of 49 or 53.84%, (2) conscious mind with 2 or 2.19%, (3) open mind with 2 or 2.19%, (4) in my mind with 7 or 7.69%, (5) in his mind with 7 or 7.769%, (6) in your mind with 2 or 2.19%, (7) state of mind with 14 or 15.38%, (8) no doubt in mind with 1 or 1.09%.

             2) The Adjective + Noun was the most frequent type of combination relating to the usage of English collocations of the Keyword in Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill with the frequency of 185 or 29.08%.
